Coastal energy storage power stations, electric workboats, yachts and offshore charging piles are exposed to high salinity, humid and corrosive atmosphere all year round. Salt fog will slowly erode the metal terminals of high-current connectors, destroy the protective plating layer, cause oxidation and pitting, sharply lift contact resistance and trigger abnormal temperature rise and arcing during plugging. Many engineering teams only focus on current and anti-spark functions while ignoring anti-corrosion capability, which leads to frequent equipment breakdown and expensive after-sales maintenance in marine projects.
Corrosion mechanism of salt spray on power connectors is straightforward. Sodium chloride molecules attach to the gap between male and female terminals, absorb moisture in the air and form electrolyte. Electrochemical reaction gradually eats away copper alloy substrates. Once the protective coating fails, continuous high current will accelerate local ablation, and the built-in pre-charge anti-spark circuit will also face short-circuit risks caused by conductive corrosion debris. Ordinary tinned connectors usually fail after 200–300 hours of neutral salt spray test, far below the demand of long-term marine operation.
YOUWEI’s laboratory launched a comparative salt spray test for three versions of QS Antispark connectors under ISO 9227 standard: standard tin-plated terminals, 3μm gold-plated terminals and 8μm thickened anti-corrosion gold-plated terminals.
Besides upgraded plating layers, we also optimize the whole sealing system for marine customized QS connectors. Double-layer silicone waterproof gaskets prevent salt fog from penetrating into the internal pre-charge resistor and spring contact components. The modified PBT shell adds anti-hydrolysis additives to avoid swelling and cracking in long-term damp environment. We divide application recommendations according to project scenarios:
All anti-corrosion upgraded QS series can retain complete anti-spark performance. The pre-charge voltage equalization structure will not be affected by sealing and plating upgrades. Our technical team can issue official SGS salt spray test reports for customers’ project bidding and third-party certification review.
